How to increase windows xp Speed

Services You Can Disable

There are quite a few services you can disable from starting automatically.
This would be to speed up your boot time and free resources.
They are only suggestions so I suggestion you read the description of each one when you run Services
and that you turn them off one at a time.

Some possibilities are:
Alerter
Application Management
Clipbook
Fast UserSwitching
Human Interface Devices
Indexing Service
Messenger
Net Logon
NetMeeting
QOS RSVP
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Registry
Routing & Remote Access
SSDP Discovery Service
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Web Client

Cleaning the Prefetch Directory

WindowsXP has a feature called Prefetch. This keeps a shortcut to recently used programs.
However it can fill up with old and obsolete programs.

To clean this periodically go to:

Star / Run / Prefetch
Press Ctrl-A to highlight all the shorcuts
Delete them

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not Displaying Logon, Logoff, Startup and Shutdown Status Messages

To turn these off:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionpoliciessystem
If it is not already there, create a DWORD value named DisableStatusMessages
Give it a value of 1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Clearing the Page File on Shutdown

Click on the Start button
Go to the Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Local Security Policy
Local Policies
Click on Security Options
Right hand menu - right click on "Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile"
Select "Enable"
Reboot

For regedit users.....
If you want to clear the page file on each shutdown:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSe ssion ManagerMemory ManagementClearPageFileAtShutdown
Set the value to 1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No GUI Boot

If you don't need to see the XP boot logo,

Run MSCONFIG
Click on the BOOT.INI tab
Check the box for /NOGUIBOOT

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Speeding the Startup of Some CD Burner Programs

If you use program other than the native WindowsXP CD Burner software,
you might be able to increase the speed that it loads.

Go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services
Double-click on IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service
For the Startup Type, select Disabled
Click on the OK button and then close the Services window
If you dont You should notice

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Getting Rid of Unread Email Messages

To remove the Unread Email message by user's login names:

Start Regedit
For a single user: Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionUnreadMail
For all users: Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionUnreadMail
Create a DWORD key called MessageExpiryDays
Give it a value of 0

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Decreasing Boot Time

Microsoft has made available a program to analyze and decrease the time it takes to boot to WindowsXP
The program is called BootVis

Uncompress the file.
Run BOOTVIS.EXE
For a starting point, run Trace / Next Boot + Driver Delays
This will reboot your computer and provide a benchmark
After the reboot, BootVis will take a minute or two to show graphs of your system startup.
Note how much time it takes for your system to load (click on the red vertical line)
Then run Trace / Optimize System
Re-Run the Next Boot + Drive Delays
Note how much the time has decreased
Mine went from approximately 33 to 25 seconds.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Increasing Graphics Performance

By default, WindowsXP turns on a lot of shadows, fades, slides etc to menu items.
Most simply slow down their display.

To turn these off selectively:

Right click on the My Computer icon
Select Properties
Click on the Advanced tab
Under Performance, click on the Settings button
To turn them all of, select Adjust for best performance
My preference is to leave them all off except for Show shadows under mouse pointer and Show window contents while dragging

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Increasing System Performance

If you have 512 megs or more of memory, you can increase system performance
by having the core system kept in memory.

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSe ssion ManagerMemory ManagementDisablePagingExecutive
Set the value to be 1
Reboot the computer

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Increasing File System Caching

To increase the amount of memory Windows will locked for I/O operations:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSe ssion ManagerMemory Management
Edit the key IoPageLockLimit

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resolving Inability to Add or Remove Programs

If a particular user cannot add or remove programs, there might be a simple registry edit neeed.

Go to HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPolicies Uninstall
Change the DWORD NoAddRemovePrograms to 0 disable it

4096 - 32megs of memory or less
8192 - 32+ megs of memory
16384 - 64+ megs of memory
32768 - 128+ megs of memory
65536 - 256+ megs of memory

The Simplest Way To Schedule Your Computer to Shut Down

The Simplest Way To Schedule Your Computer to SHUT DOWN(TIP)

Ever wanted to schedule your computer to shutdown at specific time? Windows has a secret trick that allows you to do just that.

1) Go to Start -> Run. Type in 'shutdown -s -t 120' and press Enter.

2) Your computer will shut down in 120 seconds. Change 120 to any number (in seconds) you like

Important: If at any time you wish to cancel the operation, type in the command 'shutdown -a'.

PS: You could also use 'at 22:13 shutdown -s' to specify the time to shutdown. Just change 22:13 to any time that you want (must be in 24 hours format)

~~~~~~~~~~End Notes~~~~~~~~~
-s and -t used above are command switches, which is explained in the list below:
-s Shutdown the computer
-t Set a given time for shutdown, in seconds
-r Restart the computer
-l Log off the user
-a Cancels a system shutdown already in progress
-f Forces running applications to close without warning
-i Display a GUI. It must be the first switch
You may use any of these switches to your liking. Normally I'll also add -f to the command so that it will ensure that the computer will shutdown. (but make sure you don't have any unsaved work!)
What happens on the Internet every 60 seconds
Let's say that it takes you exactly one minute to read through this post. In that time, over 6,600 photos will be uploaded to Flickr, about 70 new domains will be registered, over 1,200 new ads will be created on Craigslist, and more. Here's what happens on the Internet every 60 seconds.
That disclaimer aside and without further ado, here's what's happening each minute:
* Search engine Google serves more that 694,445 queries
* 6,600+ pictures are uploaded to Flickr
* 600 videos are uploaded to YouTube, amounting to 25+ hours of content
* 695,000 status updates, 79,364 wall posts and 510,040 comments are published on social networking site ********
* 70 new domains are registered
* 168,000,000+ emails are sent
* 320 new accounts and 98,000 tweets are generated on social networking site Twitter
* iPhone applications are downloaded more than 13,000 times
* 20,000 new posts are published on micro-blogging platform Tumblr
* Popular web browser FireFox is downloaded more than 1,700 times
* Popular blogging platform Word Press is downloaded more than 50 times
* Word Press Plugins are downloaded more than 125 times
* 100 accounts are created on professional networking site LinkedIn
* 40 new questions are asked on YahooAnswers.com
* 100+ questions are asked on Answers.com
* 1 new article is published on Associated Content, the world’s largest source of community-created content
* 1 new definition is added on UrbanDictionary.com
* 1,200+ new ads are created on Craigslist
* 370,000+ minutes of voice calls done by Skype users
* 13,000+ hours of music streaming is done by personalized Internet radio provider Pandora
* 1,600+ reads are made on Scribd, the largest social reading publishing company
Impressive? Scary? Overwhelming? We're not sure. But we do know that a lot happened in the few moments it took to look at this blog post — so you better rush to catch up.
FTP and SFTP Article
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an older protocol for moving files back and forth over the Internet and other networks. All modern web browsers still speak FTP, which was sometimes used as a substitute for HTTP in the early days of the web. FTP is still used often as a means of downloading large files.
Many web hosts still offer FTP as the preferred way of uploading new web pages to a website. However, because there is no encryption of your password, FTP is not the best choice for this purpose. And since there is no encryption of the files being moved, FTP is a poor choice indeed for more sensitive information.
SFTP (Secure FTP) is a popular replacement. Built on SSL, SFTP is just as secure as HTTPS. And most modern FTP clients, such as the free, high-quality FileZilla program for Windows, support both FTP and SFTP. SFTP offers a set of features quite similar to FTP and will be immediately familiar to FTP users, although it works quite differently "under the hood."
Every Windows, MacOS X and Linux system comes standard with a simple command line FTP client program. And MacOS X and Linux also have command line SFTP clients as standard equipment. In addition, MacOS X supports connections to FTP servers in a user-friendly way, right out of the box (you can find a great tutorial on creativemac.com).
Binary Mode and ASCII Mode in FTP
"Classic," non-secure FTP can move files in two major ways: "binary mode" and "ASCII mode." Binary mode just moves the file down the wire without modifying anything... and this is, almost always, what we want today.
"ASCII mode" is sometimes used for plain-text (usually, .txt) files. ASCII mode, named for the American Standard Code for Information Interchange which determines what byte stands for each letter, number or other character in text, corrects for differences in the way line endings are stored in text files. Windows traditionally uses a carriage return (represented by an ASCII value of 13) followed by a line feed (represented by 10). Unix typically expects just the line feed. And MacOS, at least prior to MacOS X, preferred a carriage return only.
Today, though, most text-editing and viewing programs can view text files that follow any of these three conventions (including Microsoft Word, and the free WordPad program that comes with Windows, but excluding a few annoying holdovers like Windows Notepad). So ASCII mode doesn't do us much good. These days ASCII mode is mostly an annoyance, something people accidentally leave on in a very old fashioned command-line FTP program, or accidentally turn on in a newer one. And when you're moving a program, an image or anything else with an exact file format that must not be modified, that means you get garbage instead of the file you wanted.
The norm today is for FTP to simply ship files unchanged in binary mode.
Once upon a time there was also something called "TENEX mode," to move files between computers that didn't even use the same number of bits to represent a byte. Yes, FTP has been around that long! But TENEX mode doesn't come up as an issue these days, and we're all happier for it.
Use a Shortcut to Local Area Network Connection Information
Here's something new in Windows XP, instead of using the command line program and typing ipconfig to get local area network information, you can try using the following shortcut:
* Click on Start, point to Connect to, and then click Show All Connections.
* Right–click the connection you want information about, and then click Status.
* In the connection Properties dialog box, click the Support tab.
* For more information, click on the Advanced tab.
To automatically enable the status monitor each time the connection is active, in the connection Properties dialog box, select the Show icon in taskbar notification area when connected check box.
Turning off System Beeps
If you want to turn off all system beeps (like the ones that go through your computers’ internal speaker):
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound
Edit the key Beep and give it a value of No.
..............END...........
Creating Shutdown Icon or One Click Shutdown
Navigate to your desktop. On the desktop, right-click and go to New, then to Shortcut (in other words, create a new shortcut). You should now see a pop-up window instructing you to enter a command line path.
Use this path in “Type Location of the Item”
SHUTDOWN -s -t 01
If the C: drive is not your local hard drive, then replace “C” with the correct letter of the hard drive. Click the “Next” button. Name the shortcut and click the “Finish” button.
Now whenever you want to shut down,
just click on this shortcut and you’re done.
Disabling the F3 Search Key
If you want to disable the ability to use the F3 key from either the Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet Explorer\Restrictions
Create a Dword value called NoFindFiles
Give it a value of 1
Enable/Disable Registry Editing tools
Copy the following code,paste in any notepad and save as "regtools.vbs" file. Just double click it and you will get yor regedit enabled.(Be careful to copy the code exactly as presented here including everything.
Code goes here.......
Allowing Network Access with Blank Passwords (XP and Vista)
Although you can log in locally without a password, by default, WindowsXP Pro does not allow network users to access the computer without a password. Typically you will receive an Unknown error 31 if this is the case.
To change this setting:
Run gpedit.msc
Go to Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options
Double click on Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only
Disable this option
Add Your Location Automatically to Your Gmail Signature
An exciting new feature has been added to Gmail Labs is “Location in Signature”. Just enable this lab feature and Gmail will automatically append your current location (the city and the country name) to your Gmail signature, like this:
Note that this feature uses public IP address to identify your current location, so it may be inaccurate sometimes or may slightly vary.
Here is the step by step procedure to turn on this feature-
1. Log into your Gmail inbox.
2. Go to Settings -> Labs and scroll down a bit to locate the “Location in Signature” feature.
3. Check the Enable radio button to enable this feature and click on save changes.
4. Now go to Settings -> General and go to the signature settings. Check Append your location
That’s it. Now your signature will always contain your current location. As this feature uses your IP address, guess you must have understood how exactly this feature works. It tracks the location of your IP and appends the same location as your “location signature” and hence, as said earlier, your location may vary slightly.
How to convert a FAT partition to NTFS
To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, perform the following steps.
Click Start, click Programs, and then click Command Prompt. In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS. Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.
NOTE:=
Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion from FAT to NTFS is minimal, it is best to perform a full backup of the data on the drive that it is to be converted prior to executing the convert command
Check Personal Firewall Status
How can you check the status of the connection and the firewall? Simply open Control Panel from the Start Menu, open Internet and Network Connections, then Network Connections. By default the view is of large icons.
Click the View Menu, and choose "details" in order to reveal several more columns of information about the connections that your computer has. Check the Status column to see if your connection is currently connected, and whether or not it is "firewalled." You can even drag the column headings around (I like to slide the Status column right next to the Name column. You can even remove entire columns by right-clicking the column heading and unchecking it.
Disable CD Autorun
( WinXP PRO Only)
1) Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC
2) Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System.
3) Locate the entry for Turn autoplay off and modify it as you desire.
Changing the Location Of Special Folders
You can modify the registry to change the location of special folders like:
My Documents
Favorites
My Pictures
Personal
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Double click on any locations you want to change and alter the path
Logoff or restart for the changes to go into effect
Note: TweakUI from Microsoft will allow you to make these changes from a dialog box as well.
Be Very Careful with this CTRL+C and CTRL+V
Be Very Careful with this CTRL+C and CTRL+V
We all copy various data by using ctrl+c/Copy for pasting elsewhere.
This copied data is stored on clipboard and is accessible over the net by a combination of javascripts and ASP.
Just try this:
1) Copy any text by ctrl+c
2) Click the Link: http://www.friendlycanadian.com/appl.../clipboard.htm
3) You will see the text you copied on the Screen which was
accessed by this web page.
Moral:
Do not keep sensitive data (like passwords, creditcard numbers, PIN etc.) in the clipboard while surfing the web. It is extremely easy to extract the text stored in the clipboard to steal your sensitive information. If sufficient data is stored by mistake it would give away confidential and important information without you knowing about it.
To Avoid This
To avoid this, follow these steps:
1. Go to internet options->security
2. Press custom level
3. In the security settings, select disable under Allow paste operations via script.
Now the contents of your clipboard are safe.
Pass this information on to create an awareness of the same.
Safe Browsing
Differences of GSM, GPRS, UMTS and HSDPA
1. GSM: 2G Europian standard and the first digital mobile system. It offers only
circuit-switched traffic (i.e voice calls,
SMS...etc) and data transfer at very low
bitrates 9.6kbps.
2. GPRS: also reffered to as phase 2+. It offered packet-switched traffic with
new network components integrated
over the existant GSM core network.
This allowed data bitrates to increase
to 171kbps. It is also considered as the
first step towards 3G networks.
3. EDGE: It was made to cover the delay of delivery of 3G/UMTS network.
It supported data rates upto 384kbps.
4. UMTS: the first 3G Europian standard network. It is the optimal solution for
GSM operators to support 3G services.
The Air interface technique used for
this network is WCDMA. This technique
allowed data rates to reach 2Mbps.
5. HSDPA: It is actually a software upgrade to the UMTS network using
the same air interface technique used
in UMTS (WCDMA) and supporting data
rates upto 10Mbps.
Q: Why is my internet connection intermittent despite full HSDPA signal?
A: The service that you receive on your connection depends partly on how
busy the network is. Voice and text
users take priority over dongle (data)
users, so when the network is
particularly busy, data speeds may be
slow even though signal strength is high. Conversely when the network is
not busy, you may get fast data speeds
although you barely have a signal.
Unfortunately you can only influence
this aspect of service by connecting at
less sociable hours.
Here's the solution-->
Open Run and then type "gpedit.msc".
Now goto User Configuration > Administrative templates > Windows Component > Windows Explorer.
Click on Windows Explorer you will find the 3rd option on the right side of screen "Removes the Folder Option menu item from the Tools menu"
Just check it, if it is not configured then change it to enable by double clicking on it and after applying again set it to not configured.
Ways to protect bad effects of your phone
Today's post is about protecting against electromagnetic waves of your mobile. In one day, If you are talking with mobile phone more than 15 minutes, you may be in risk.
 We can minimize bad effects with a few tips
In our life, mobile phones has an important place. But we have to minimize the electromagnetic absorption.
Here are some tips;
1- Don't touch the antenna while talking with your mobile phone. If you close the antenna, phone will circulate more electromagnetic wave. Figure 2 is showing the correct position.
2- If there is low signal on your place, Dont talk with your mobile. If your call is urgent, you have to talk max. 10-20 seconds.. In low signal, Your phone is circulating 6-7 times powerful electromagnetic wave.
3- Try to leave a distance between your phone and your ear.
4- Learn your SAR value. If it's highter than 2.0W/Kg, change your phone immediately (for ex: Nokia N95 is 0.59W/Kg) Nokia has a list of SAR values. You can learn your value in this page (There is no Nokia Phone higher than 2.0W/Kg)
5- If you have to talk with your mobile phone more than 1-2 hours, I hardly recommend you to use headsets. That will definitely protect you against electromagnetic waves (I âm always using headphones when talking for hours..)
Hope u like these tips!!
ENJOY!!
